What Does Board Certified Mean?

Just like physicians, attorneys sometimes specialize, occasionally limiting their practice to one area exclusively. Texas has "Board Certified" attorneys in several specialties such as criminal, family, and bankruptcy law. The lawyers who are certified must complete a laborious application, get recommendations, pass a special test in their areas of choice, and practice mostly in their specialty areas. I have a lot of respect for board certified specialists. I often refer cases to them. However, a lawyer can be an expert in a particular area without being board certified, and there are board certified attorneys who for one reason or another I would never recommend. As I have said, I consider myself a primary care attorney. I don't want to be a specialist. For me, the drawbacks to specializing outweigh the advantages.
